Atching Tan is a Romani phrase that means ‘stopping place’.

Atching Tan was a project which spans Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Working under the umbrella of the Romany Theatre Company, this project had five clearly defined and yet integral parts:

to gather reminiscences, stories and tales from the Gypsy, Romany, Traveller community whilst they are still able to be told first hand
to write, record and broadcast a series for radio, based on real events within the Gypsy, Romany, Traveller and non-Gypsy, Romany, Traveller communities
develop a teaching tool for schools to use to encourage students awareness of Gypsy, Romany, Traveller culture and to cultivate understanding between the two communities
research information on Gypsies, Romanies, Travellers in the region alongside developing a website to host this information
to produce an archive, capturing material from the project in total and installing the archive in various prominent and appropriate locations across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Throughout the whole project ran the thread of Gypsy, Romany, Traveller and non-Gypsy, Romany, Traveller volunteers working together. All volunteers werre given the opportunity to gain an Open College Network certificate as well as developing their own skills in their chosen area, improving their team work skills and igniting aspirations for their future.
